OpenLR™ announced - and it's open source!
TISA member TomTom has launched an open-source, royalty-free dynamic location referencing technology it calls OpenLR™.
Dynamic location referencing is very important for travel information technologies such as TPEG, as it lets messages refer logically to a specific point in the transport network without pre-coding the location and with the capability to be correctly decoded in a terminal device that doesn't need to be using the same map.
OpenLR™ joins the already-announced AGORA-C method in this work area.
The open source, royalty free nature of the technology is of great interest to the industry. From the press release:
""This technological development is being introduced to the open source community to assist in delivering location based services to customers," says Mark Gretton, TomTom's Director of Product Engineering. "TomTom will use this technology for its own services too, allowing us to transmit content like HD Traffic™ to connected devices and improve service quality and coverage.""
